The best homemade granola

This recipe has been a long time coming, and I’m so excited to finally share it with you. One of the reasons I love it is because it’s fitting for any time of year. So, I guess another way to put it is, it’s timeless.

Something else that makes this granola recipe great is, it’s adaptable to whatever pantry ingredients you probably already have. Plus, you can throw in more add-ins based on your favorite nuts or even dried fruits.

What are the ingredients in this homemade granola?

  • Old-fashioned oats – you can also use steel cut oats (preferably not instant).
  • Maple cinnamon walnuts – I found these at MOM’s Organic and they rock. Only have plain nuts? No problem. Simply dress them in ground cinnamon and maple syrup and toast them until golden brown on the stovetop or in the oven.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Dark brown sugar – you can use light brown if that’s all you have.
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Unsalted butter
  • Maple syrup – if you can get this locally, it will taste 100% better. Check out your farmer’s market.
  • Coconut oil

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, it’s a pretty simple process. First, combine your dry ingredients in a bowl, then incorporate the wet ingredients such as the melted butter, syrup and oil.

Once the crumbles are formed, throw it all on a sheet pan and bake until all is evenly golden brown.

One word of caution: Keep an eye on the granola in the oven as it will brown quickly. You don’t want it to burn!

What can I eat this with?

  • Breakfast bowls
  • Acai bowls
  • Yogurt or cereal
  • Afternoon snack
  • Ice cream topping

I can’t wait to see how yours turns out! This is also a fun activity for the whole family, especially to get the kids to help you in the kitchen. I hope you'll try it out. Leave me a comment below, and let me know what you think.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup maple cinnamon walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add the oats, walnuts, flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Mix to combine.
  3. Add the cooled (and melted) butter and lightly mix. Then add 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup to your liking. Mix until various sized crumbles are formed.
  4. Place onto a sheet pan and drizzle with reserved coconut oil. Bake in the over for 12-15 minutes, stirring halfway through to prevent burning.
  5. If you want an extra crunch, turn the oven on high broil for about 2 minutes until you get your desired golden brown. Be careful not to burn as it browns very quickly!

Recipe Notes:

  • Makes between 3-4 cups. Store cooled granola in a airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Though, I imagine you'll eat it before then!
