Christmas Crinkle Cookies

“So come on down. It’s cookie time, it’s cookie time, it’s cookie time…”

Shoutout to all you millennial girls out there, it’s the best scene and song from Troop Beverly Hills. I have so many thoughts. First, outfits are on fleek. Second, the choreographed dance moves are fire. Should I make this a Tik Tok dance? Lastly, can I address the girls walking around the restaurant saying, “Cigars, cigarettes, cookies!” It’s such a vibe.

ANYWAYS – Let’s talk about these red velvet crinkle cookies. They are absolutely divine! I have to say, I think I hit a home-run with this original recipe.

When the tongue hits the cookie, it’s crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Grab a glass of ice-cold milk, take a warm bite – and byeeee. Delicious is an understatement. I’m addicted.

Watch my Tik Tok video of how to make these cookies!

Reasons why you should make these for Christmas this year:

100% crowd-approved. Just a few days ago I brought these to my mom’s dinner party and they were demolished instantly. Everyone was asking me for the recipe.

Recipe can be easily doubled. You’ll likely find you have most of these ingredients in your pantry already making this an affordable dessert! You may just need to buy red food coloring. See my note below.

They are fun to make! They undergo a full Tyra makeover. Before you put them in the oven, they look like cute little Russian tea cakes. And when you take them out, they’ve undergone a full makeover – their hair is dyed red, they possess beautiful lines and transform into something confident and beautiful cookies.

A few tips and tricks:

Food coloring – I recommend using Wilton’s as it’s an intense and vibrant red. This gives the cookies a luscious velvety color. Otherwise, you may need to add more drops of a generic brand.

Room temperature ingredients – This is a must for the eggs and butter! There’s a science behind it (which I won’t get into), but it’ll throw off the texture of the cookies otherwise.

Dough balls – After mixing the wet and dry ingredients, the texture of the dough may be sticky. I recommend putting the bowl straight into the freezer for 10-15 minutes so it has a little time to firm up. The perfect texture should be just malleable enough to roll into balls. The dough should NOT be rock solid, so set a timer!

Slam dem cookies – If the cookies aren’t expanding enough to your liking, remove the cookie sheet from the oven and bang the pan on the counter 1-2 times to flatten them out. Do this at the very end of the baking time.

Leftovers? – These will stay fresh for up to 3 days after baking when stored in an air-tight container. I recommend putting them in the microwave for 10 seconds and they actually melt in your mouth.

Equipment needed:

  • Kitchen Aid or hand-mix
  • 1 Tbs cookie scoop
  • Parchment paper
  • Large cookie sheet
  • Cooling rack

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I am wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup (150 grams) All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cups + 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 6 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon Wilton's red food coloring* (see note in blog post above)

Sugar coating:

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large cooking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift and mix the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder.
  3. Using a Kitchen Aid bowl or hand-mixer, add butter & sugars and mix until creamy. Then add eggs one at a time mixing in between. Then add the vanilla extract and food coloring. Mix. Slowly add the dry ingredients mixture into the wet. Do not over-mix. *Freeze dough in bowl for 10-15 minutes until slightly more firm for the next step. While waiting, set two small bowls to the side – one with granulated and the other with powdered sugar.
  4. Scoop cookies into 1 tablespoon balls. Working one at a time, first roll balls in granulated sugar until coated. Then roll them in powdered sugar. Make sure all sides are fully coated, then place onto cookie sheet. *Bake for 10-12 minutes until cookies are cracked but gooey in the middle.
  5. Allow to sit on sheet for 2 minutes then set on cooling rack. Enjoy while warm!

Recipe Notes:

  • Do not over-freeze the dough – The texture should be just soft enough to roll into balls.
  • For the perfect shape and texture – you may need to slam the cookie sheet on the counter 1-2 times to flat the cookies if they aren't expanding enough. See note in blog post above.
